We regret to inform you that the Lynchburg office is currently closed as of May 11, 2010. DVES will maintain its non-profit, tax-exempt status and will conduct services through its administrative office in Salem, VA. What is DVES?
DVES, also known as: Domestic Values Education and Support, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt corporation designed to provide intervention services for both domestic violence and substance abuse. The foundation of our program’s philosophy is based upon our understanding of addictive behaviors and treatment, including 12-step work and relapse prevention. Because we promote world peace, first in the home, then in the community, then to the planet, we welcome the opportunity to provide education and support groups to the community as a whole.
Facts You Should Know:
- 31% of all American homes experience domestic violence.
- 25% to 50% of all domestic violence cases involve substance abuse. When one problem is treated, the other does not just disappear.
- 20% of all teenage girls and 19% of all teenage boys have been victims of ‘dating violence’.
- 75% of all children who witness domestic violence grow to be victims or offenders or both.
- The U.S. National Child Abuse & Data System reports that over 55% of the physical abuse of children is by women. And F.B.I. crime statistics report 65 to 70% of all child abuse related deaths occur at the hands of their mothers or female caretakers.
- In a compilation of 89 studies reflecting the years 1980 to 2000:
- 64 of 89 studies indicate that women are more likely than men to assault their partners. 16 of 89 studies indicate that the initiation of assault between men and women is equal. 9 studies reveal that men initiate assault.
